What Santa Monica Wants

Unbelievably exciting. Not exactly what you might expect as my synopsis (the incumbents were re-elected). But here's why.

Just over three month ago, I pulled papers, wrangled a few hundred signatures and filed paperwork to get on the ballot. Thus began the process of building out the campaign - figuring out the messaging, prioritizing spend on time and money, and beginning the introduction phase of the election with the goal of meeting key people.

Now I'll be the first to admit that I am DEFINITELY a fresh face in the space - unlike my competitors I haven't been involved for decades, haven't sat on various commissions, and don't have a PTA role and kids in the school system.

Yet in walking the neighborhoods - and meeting people - I think the message connected. We need a more responsive Council that listens to the people instead of just themselves.

And 5,022 people agreed - and darkened the spot next to my name. And perhaps you're among those people. And if so, I really appreciate it.

Simply put, for a relatively small amount of money - we were able to begin building a brand that should continue to grow in the coming years.

As a business guy (read: geek) I like to quantify the results - here's my take:

- My cost per vote (money spent on campaigning to get a single vote) was $1.49
- Close competitor was roughly $5. Incumbents? Well over $11 per vote.

What does that mean? We ran an efficient campaign and got really good results. Incumbents spent more than $110K/each to win. We spent far less - and got more.

In summary - I've learned a tremendous amount, met great people, oh, and this is definitely laying groundwork for the future.

Thank you for your time, effort and kind words of support. It's a great day all around. And unbelievably exciting.

Most sincerely,

Michael
