What Santa Monica Wants

A little bit about me: I grew up in the heart of politics and civil service– the Washington DC area. My mother is a teacher and my father an architect – so suffice it to say that I have a deep appreciation for two of the issues that I believe play a large part in making a community whole. Having a top educational system and making sensible planning decisions - both play critical roles in the quality of life our residents experience.

Just before college, I found myself volunteering for the first Clinton Inaugural, and during college I went to work for two offices in the White House – assisting the Director of Communications at the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, and then in a role that fundamentally changed my career path, I went to work at the White House Conference on Small Business where I found my calling in helping to empower the smaller businesses that are truly the lifeblood of our economy.

Today, I continue to advise small businesses and startups – because I see the passion the founders bring to each and every day of work. Their businesses are treated like their family and are so very critical in building and supporting the communities where they operate. There are few things I enjoy more than speaking with upstart businesses and helping them to achieve their goals – whether it’s reaching out to new customers, developing new innovations, or just re-focusing on the things that matter.

It’s that ‘re-focusing on the things that matter’ that has me before you today. As I’ve lived in Santa Monica, I’ve seen the ways and means that the city operates and what concerns me most is the separation between the City Council and it’s constituents – when it comes to making key decisions that affect all of us.

My top priority is 'community engagement' that is, making the effort to reach out to our citizens to discuss the issues - and then working collaboratively to provide real solutions.

That's a bit about me, and some of my thoughts. Please let me know yours - after all, I'm working to learn more of What Santa Monica Wants? Thank you.
