I am a tenant in a rent controlled unit and am concerned with the lack of attention paid to rent controlled buildings. My building is very run down and not well taken care of. I feel rent control owners should be held responsible for keeping their buildings up to a higher standard of safety and cleanliness.

Chrissi -

Thank you for your message. You're absolutely correct in your belief that landlords - whether in rent controlled apartments or non-rent controlled apartments - are responsible for proper upkeep. From the feedback I've been getting - this issue is particularly prevalent with the buildings that are covered by rent control - but allowing ANY home to be rundown or unclean is NOT acceptable.

That said, there is a solution to getting your home up to par. The California Department of Consumer Affairs has a very clear explanation of the way to get repairs handled in any tenant situation. You can find it here and I think it will be useful to getting the results you desire AND deserve. Please let me know how it goes - and thank your for letting me know 'What Santa Monica Wants.'
